Why the Young Aren't Buying Homes or Cars. | Bay Area Real Estate ...

There?s a great discussion happening over at Derek Thompson?s article for The Atlantic titled? Why Aren?t Twentysomethings Buying Cars or Houses?

Check it out? here are some snips from commenters:

This is also something that gets overlooked in the discussion of housing prices.?Yes, drops in housing prices are bad for people who already own homes, but it would be nice if we who don?t own houses could consider buying one in the next ten years without spending over 50% of our net income on the mortgage payment. Of course, this isn?t the only policy that reflects entrenched interests, but it is one of the more important ones.

Also, and I think this is a lesser contributing factor, Gen Y, at least among my friends, expects to spend the first eight years or so out of college in a fairly mobile existence, moving between coasts and cities on a fairly regular basis. Because of that, the substantial transaction costs of a house don?t make sense, if you expect to move every 24 months. However, I think that this is as much of a trend.

And

We don?t want to buy into the American Dream just to see the rug pulled out from underneath us, like happened to so many folks in the past 5 years.?We?ve seen that buying a house isn?t a guaranteed investment, and that renting isn?t just throwing money away. We?ve also seen ourselves and our friends lose their jobs, and flexibility to move (somewhere cheaper to save money, somewhere else where there are jobs) is the best buffer for job insecurity.

And

Cities are what I need right now. It is easy for me to get to work on public transportation (20 to 40 minutes depending on traffic.) My apartment is very centrally located and close to supermarkets, bars, restaurants, movie theatres, concert venues, etc. I can easily walk to a lot of places. Also since I don?t have a family, I don?t need much space. Buying a house would be excessive and take a lot of time to clean.

Love this one:

My Husband and I are both 34 and we do not own a home or a car. ?We use zipcar and rent an apartment in NYC mostly because of cost. The social pressure to become a homeowner and have a nice car, has been replaced with the freedom of mobility and being debt free. ?We have so many friends and relatives barely getting by because they are upside down on their homes, cars, and still paying off student loans. ?We are lucky to live in a city where public transportation is available(most of the time). ?

It?s not just about not ?understanding what owning a car is about? as much as it is a rejection of an old way of life. ?We can see with our own eyes, how enslaving debt can be.?

Wow.

I?m 28, am a member of a double income-no kids household and currently live in Manhattan. ?I have three views on why I didn?t buy a house earlier, don?t own a house now and might not ever own a house.

?

In short, I hate paperwork, like being mobile, don?t like working on my property, hate having too much stuff and depending on your perspective have been either traumatized or educated as a result of the housing market crash.

This one?e harsh:

Right now my income is $180k per year, which is not the highest but probably better than most of my friends. ?My family is fortunate to have some help from our respective families. ?We save between a half and two thirds of this income. ?I can easily purchase our dream house if I were open to taking a mortgage.

I am completely convinced, however, that doing so would be signing my soul to the devil, although that?s not entirely fair to the devil since he probably wouldn?t be able to wreak as much damage as they have if he tried.

And

My lack of home-ownership ambition is a constant source of concern for my father, an immigrant who scraped his whole life in pursuit of home ownership. His ultimate success in acquisition was matched by a constant admonishment to me to ?own a piece of property? ? a theme that I have learned is common among immigrant parents of real-estate-apathetic children. Watching him struggle for the first twenty years of my life in the pursuit and maintenance of various homes had the opposite effect I imagine he?d hoped it would: it left me with a sharp distaste for spending your life chained to an arrangement of wood, plaster, and cement.

And

Two words: student loans

And

My generation has never been given the torch. Not even a hint of it. Sure you may have the internet start-up folks to suggest that we?ve been integrated, but it isn?t true. Politicians don?t pander to us, businesses want our money but not our work, and our elders have the gall to destroy the economy, place burden on our futures, and then ask why we don?t behave exactly like they did. The world isn?t the same. It?s an old man?s world now.

Don?t ask why we aren?t behaving the same way as your generation, or the one before you. Ask yourselves and your compatriots why and how you changed the game. This wasn?t a natural shift. A thousand decisions small and large have turned the world into this place. They weren?t decisions I or anyone I know made.

Changing social mood will drive our economy in ways that no economist today can predict. Student debt and the struggles of today?s young adults will be much bigger issues over the next few years.

Game cam brings out the worst in local wildlife ? Living ? Bangor ...

FORT KENT, Maine ? Living out in the country, as we do here on Rusty Metal Farm, contact with some of the local wildlife is a near daily occurrence.

Sharing the farm with a seemingly endless variety of critters of all shapes and sizes with fur, feathers or scales means that on any given day the odds are in my favor of seeing something intriguing or mysterious enough to send me running to consult one of my nature books or the Internet.

But nowhere in my personal library or from within the depths of Google is there any reference to the animosity that bears hold toward photography.

Certainly, there are cultural and societal references documenting human emotions about being photographed.

In some cultures having one?s photo taken is perceived as having one?s soul stolen.

In others ? largely those populated by celebrities such as Sean Penn ? it?s an invitation to a smackdown.

Now you can add bears to the list of those who prefer to remain off camera.

Earlier this summer a friend and I set up a game camera next to Rusty Metal Pond in an attempt to capture images of a pair of beavers who had moved in and set up house.

Mr. and Mrs. Beaver were in the middle of constructing a pretty impressive lodge and we figured it would be fun to document their progress.

The camera itself is a fairly simple piece of technology running off a set of batteries and a built-in motion detector.

When an animal or bird ? or, as we learned, a bug, leaf or branch ? walks, flies or wafts past, the movement trips the camera?s shutter and a photo is taken. There?s even a flash for low light and night shots.

Patience, my friend told me, is the secret to getting good photos with a game camera. The longer it?s left alone, the better the odds of capturing something interesting.

What we were hoping for, of course, was a National Geographic-quality sequence of photos of our friends the beavers building their home.

What we got was a less-than impressive array of fuzzy night photos in which, if you squint and look at the images from the right angle, there may be a beaver doing something.

There also were several shots of the vegetation in front of the camera and way more photos than I ever needed of me on the riding lawn mower cutting the grass around the pond.

Were the beavers camera shy? Were their lodge-building techniques proprietary in nature and thus no photos allowed?

We may never know, but clearly if we wanted some game shots, a change of venue was in order.

So we reloaded the camera?s memory card and set off to position it on a trail here on the farm known to be frequented by creatures great and small.

And there it sat for more than two months ? out of sight and definitely out of mind until last week when it hit us, ?Wow, maybe we should go check the camera.?

A short hike later brought us to within sight of where we had left it, but it seemed to be missing.

Getting closer, we saw it was not missing, rather the tripod on which it sat had fallen over.

Getting closer still, we then saw it had not so much fallen as it had been smacked over and perhaps even stomped on.

What creature, we asked ourselves, would hold such malice toward an innocent game camera? We could hardly wait to get back home and find out.

The first series of photos showed the north end of a southbound female moose sauntering by either unaware of, or uncaring of the game camera, though now that I look back on it, her expression as she looked over her shoulder toward the lens may have been one of, ?Does this camera make my butt look big??

The next two shots were of a smaller moose at night and then some more of those fuzzy, ?find-the-animal-in-this-picture? shots.

Then ? pay dirt.

An extreme closeup of a black bear looking directly into the lens.

Now, we are not sure what happened next, but best as we can figure, bears ? or at least that particular bear ? are not exactly patrons of the visual arts.

The shot immediately after the close up is a sort of action photo as the camera is pushed to the ground.

The next series shows the ground from a profile angle since the camera was on its side with a bear apparently jumping up and down on top of it.

Bears are known for having a keen sense of smell, and my friend and I wondered if perhaps they have pretty good hearing to go with that and perhaps the soft ?clicking? of the camera?s shutter irritated the bruin.

According to the American Bear Association?s website, ?It is believed that black bears hear much better than humans, probably in the ultrasonic range.?

The structure of a bear?s ear is unique from other omnivores in that, according to the website: ?The middle ear consists of a balloon-shaped, bony structure that forms a resonating chamber around the ear drum.? Called the auditory bullae, this structure increases hearing sensitivity.

Over the years, I?ve had more than one bear encounter here on the farm ? from being charged by a mother bear with a cub, to having a young bear circle the small cabin I use as a writing studio.

Every time the bear and I have both come away unscathed ? if a bit rattled, at least on my part.

Bears seem to want to mind their own business and avoid humans.

Camera-toting paparazzi, on the other hand, could very well be fair game.

So, just in case, next time we set up the game camera, it?s going to be tied to a tree.

Mesothelioma - Your Basic Information | How to Cancer

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is becoming more and more common. The most common cause of this cancer is exposure to asbestos. When constantly exposed with insufficient protection, asbestos dust and fibres affect the mesothelial cells which make up the mesothelium.

The mesothelium is the outer lining that protects some of the body?s most vital organs such as the heart and lungs. The mesothelial cells become abnormal after lengthy periods of constant exposure to asbestos causing an array of problems.

Due to the latency period and symptoms of this cancer, mesothelioma is very difficult to diagnose. Mesothelioma takes decades to mature and develop fully and this is why many elderly men who were exposed to asbestos thirty years before are just discovering they have the cancer.

A lot of these men are currently lodging multi-million dollar lawsuits against the companies that exposed them to the dangers of asbestos without sufficient protection.

The organs that are affected most by mesotheliomas are the lungs. The most common type of mesotheliomas which is called pleural mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs and can cause symptoms such as coughing, breathing and swallowing difficulties, shortness of breath and fever.

Another area that can be affected by mesothelioma is the abdomen. This is less common and this is known as peritoneal mesothelioma. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include nausea and vomiting, weight loss, fever, bowel obstruction, loss of appetite and general pain in the stomach area.

The last and least common type of mesotheliomas is known as pericardial mesothelioma and it affects the heart and the tissue surrounding it. Symptoms of this form of the cancer include palpitations, breathing difficulties and persistent coughing.

Generally, the symptoms of mesotheliomas are typical of many other diseases and this makes it very difficult to diagnose.

There are treatments for mesothelioma although these are usually unsuccessful. If the cancer is treated aggressively in its early stages then there is a good chance of a patient surviving.

However, due to the difficulty to diagnose mesothelioma, the cancer is not normally found until it is too late. Treatments that are used for mesotheliomas include surgery, radiation therapy, palliative therapy and chemotherapy.

Research for additional treatment of mesothelioma is being done at various cancer centers all over the United States as well as by pharmaceutical companies.

Military Surveillance Balloons Head Stateside

Some of the equipment from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is no longer needed and will be deployed in Texas to assist U.S. Customs and Border Protection, KGRV.com reported on Aug. 10. Blimp-like balloons, called aerostats, will be used to monitor the ranchlands of the western Rio Grande Valley.

"This is Department of Defense equipment that we are testing and evaluating ... to see what kind of utility it may have in regards to border enforcement," Border Patrol Agent Enrique Mendiola said. "Anytime you can acquire this type of technology or any type of equipment as a force multiplier, it's always welcomed.?

The aerostats, which have cameras that can see 360 degrees, will be tested for several months. ?Aerostats? primary advantages over other platforms capable of providing elevated, persistent surveillance (manned aircraft and UAVs) appear to be low life cycle cost and long dwell time,? according to a 2006 report by the Congressional Research Service titled Potential Military Use of Airships and Aerostats.
