Egypt balloon flights resume after deadly crash | Morocco World News
CAIRO, April 21, 2013 (AFP)
Hot air balloon flights resumed in the city of Luxor on Sunday, nearly two months after a deadly accident killed 19 tourists, Egyptian officials told AFP.
Four flights took off from the ancient temple city, with around 70 tourists on board, said Ahmed Abboud who heads the Balloon Flights union.
?Egyptian authorities have tightened security measures, including a review by an aviation engineer before and after take-off,? Abboud said.
Luxor governor Ezzat Saad was on the first flight to take off ?to reassure people that the situation is back to normal and that balloons are safe.?
He said a technical team from the ministry of civil aviation went to Luxor to monitor security checks by the balloon flight operators.
Authorities had ordered a ban on balloon flights in Luxor after the February 26 crash that killed 19 Asian and European tourists.
The ban ?had a negative effect on us. It was a bad period,? said Yasser al-Zembili, who owns one of the companies. ?We hope the tourists come back.?
The activities of the company whose balloon crashed remain suspended.
Residents and tour industry professionals had feared that the accident would keep more tourists away, as Egypt struggles to revive an industry which raises much of its foreign currency revenues.

Oregon juror jailed for texting during trial
SALEM, Ore. (AP) ? A judge in Oregon noticed an unexpected glow on a juror's chest while the courtroom lights were dimmed during video evidence in an armed-robbery trial.
The juror, it seemed, was texting.
Marion County Circuit Judge Dennis Graves cleared the courtroom and excused all jurors except 26-year-old Benjamin Kohler.
According to a news release from the Marion County Sheriff's Office, Kohler had no explanation for his actions.
Jurors in Oregon are given explicit instructions at the outset of each trial not to use cellphones in court.
Graves held Kohler in contempt, and Kohler spent most of Tuesday and Wednesday in the county jail. He was released Wednesday night.
Neither the nature of the text message nor its recipient was disclosed.
Kohler did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment Thursday.
An alternate juror took his place. Sheriff's spokesman Don Thomson said the trial ended Thursday with the defendant found guilty.

Vulnerability to Stress May Up Risk of Heart Disease | Psych Central ...

Study authors explain that psychosocial factors and personality traits have been consistently associated with cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality, but their role in the prediction of risk was still not clear.
This study investigated whether mental vulnerability (defined as ?a tendency to experience psychosomatic symptoms or inadequate interpersonal reactions?), increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.
The study incorporated data from three Danish population cohorts from which almost 11,000 individuals free of any cardiovascular disease were followed-up for a mean period of 15.9 years. During this period all cardiovascular events (fatal and non-fatal) were recorded.
At the beginning of the study, researchers measured mental vulnerability on a validated 12-point scale. The results categorized subjects into three groups: ?non-vulnerable, latent or mentally vulnerable?.
?The scale consists of questions on both mental and physical symptoms,? said the study?s first author,?Anders Borglykke, Ph.D. Questions generally measured the level of stress or a personality which is more receptive to stress.
Prior studies have found the scale to be associated with early mortality and ischemic heart disease. To assess the predictive ability of the scale, the results were added to a statistical model with classical risk factors for cardiovascular disease (age, sex, smoking, systolic blood pressure and total cholesterol).
During the follow-up period there were 3045 fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular events recorded in the study population of 10,943 subjects.
When the statistical analysis was performed, results showed that mental vulnerability was significantly associated with fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular events independently of the classical risk factors; the risk of events in the mentally vulnerable was 36 percent higher than in the non-vulnerable.
Although the findings show a statistically significant association between mental vulnerability and cardiovascular disease, mental vulnerability should be viewed as part of a larger view of CV disease and not as an independent risk factor.
?Several studies have found risk factors for cardiovascular disease which are clearly independent but within a broader context contribute little if anything to actual risk prediction,? saidBorglykke.
?One of the reasons for this is that the impact of the well established risk factors ? age, sex, smoking, blood pressure and total cholesterol ? tend to dominate the risk stratification models.
?This means that a risk factor such as our scale of mental vulnerability clearly increases the risk significantly ? by 36 percent ? but still does not improve risk prediction in the general population.?
?However,? added Borglykke, ?these results do not necessarily mean that we should ignore mental vulnerability in our assessment of individual risk. It is still possible that it might improve risk prediction ? or even emerge as a new marker to explain or reclassify some cardiovascular cases which cannot be attributed to classical risk factors.
?So mental vulnerability might describe a ?new dimension? when compared to the five classical risk factors, but to take this forward we need to identify sub-groups of the population where mental vulnerability does improve risk prediction beyond the classic risk factors.?
Borglykke believes the association between mental vulnerability and cardiovascular disease may be explained by the chronic psychological stress mentally vulnerable people experience. This, he added, might also provide a clue for reducing the risk ? by removing the triggers of chronic stress to which such individuals are exposed.

Council Meeting Highlights | The Wildlife Society News
The Wildlife Society 2013 midyear Council Meeting was held March 24-25 during the 78th Annual North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference in Arlington, Virginia. New TWS Executive Director, Ken Williams, was welcomed and introduced to Council and members attending the meeting. Executive Director Williams briefed Council on his activities for the last three weeks and gave his impressions of the issues confronting TWS.
Council members voted on or agreed to implement various new initiatives and activities.
The TWS fiscal year will be changed to start 1 July 2014.
A new computer infrastructure and membership portal software will be purchased that will enhance member services.
The proceeds of the 2013 Investors Campaign will be dedicated to partially funding the new TWS computer infrastructure and membership portal.
The Renewable Energy Working Group request for official status was approved.
The Range Working Group request for interim status was approved.
The Wetlands Working Group request for a six-month extension of interim status was approved.
Thomas A. Roberts was approved for a seat on the Certification Review Board.
An initiative to encourage more active collaboration with Mexican colleagues and members will be initiated.
TWS staff will be developing a plan for generating more frequent press releases on TWS journal papers that may have broad interest.
The Celebrate our Wildlife Conservation Heritage (COWCH) videos will be given a presence on the new online Retirees Center, and the Center?s content will be enhanced with content that?s relevant to TWS retirees.
The Policy Priorities for 2013 were approved. They are:
