Coastal Carolina baseball holds off rain, Iowa

Any time your defense is prone to having errors, normally that is going to lead to a loss.

Coastal Carolina?s defense started off its game against Iowa on Friday in that fashion in the Caravelle Resort Baseball at the Beach tournament at BB&T Coastal Field.

However, the Chanticleers had a stellar pitcher in Tyler Herb on the mound and the sophomore led CCU to a nail-biting 1-0 win.

?For us, any win right now, when things aren?t going good offensively is big,? Coastal coach Gary Gillmore said. ?We came in here last year and lost the opening game to Kansas State in very similar fashion. We were up 1-0 all game long and ended up losing 2-1. We made a few very good plays and we miscued some easy ones. Their pitcher had a great game and Herb did a great job as well.?

Herb allowed three hits in seven shutout innings. He had four strikeouts in the game, which is the same amount he had in his first game of the season. Herb also walked two, which he wasn?t very happy about.

?I?m just throwing strikes and pounding the zone,? Herb said. ?I?m trying to stay away from walks as much as possible but I?m disappointed with the two walks.?

Herb improved to 2-0 and has a 0.97 ERA. The two walks were his only ones thus far this season.

?He has been outstanding,? Gilmore said of Herb. ?The young man has natural action on the ball. He carves us up in intrasquads when he has command of his ball and throws strikes. He has had that the first two weeks.?

The Hawkeyes and Chanticleers combined for three errors in the first inning. Iowa had two, which allowed CCU to get runners on first and second. However, Coastal was unable to push a run across.

Both teams were hitless until the third inning.

In the fourth, the Chanticleers got on the scoreboard. The inning started with a double from Sloan Gilliam, who got to third on a sacrifice bunt by Daniel Bowman. Bryce Dial then drove in the only run of the game on a groundout.

The Hawkeyes threatened in the eighth, putting runners on second and third with two outs. The Chants turned to reliever Ryan Connolly, who struck out Dan Sheppard to end the threat.

?I thought in some areas we?ve improved from last Saturday,? Gilmore said of his team?s play Friday. ?At some point in time, this team is going to hit. I?m not quite sure what the reason is; we are so slow on the offensive part. A lot of it is confidence and we got a lot of new guys, so we need a couple of the older guys to get hot and show us how to get it done.?
