Maine man, 74, held in deaths of teenage tenants

(AP) ? A 74-year-old Maine man was charged in the shooting deaths of two tenants inside an apartment he rented out at his home, possibly over a dispute about where they parked their cars during a snowstorm, state police said Sunday.

James Pak was arrested at about 10 p.m. Saturday following a standoff at his suburban neighborhood home in Biddeford, about 15 miles south of Portland, police said. He is charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Derrick Thompson, 19, and Thompson's girlfriend, 18-year-old Alivia Welch.

Thompson's mother, Susan Johnson, 44, called police to report the shootings at about 7 p.m. She and her 6-year-old son also live in the apartment, which is attached to the main house where Pak lived.

Before the shootings, Biddeford police were called to Pak's home regarding a dispute between Pak and his tenants over their cars being parked in his driveway during the snowstorm, said state police spokesman Steve McCausland. Biddeford banned street parking during the night so city crews could plow the streets.

Minutes after officers left the home, they received the call reporting the shootings. Upon their return, Biddeford police rescued Johnson and her young son, and Pak retreated to his part of the house, where he lived with his wife, McCausland said.

Pak's wife left the home, and he surrendered hours later after talking to police negotiators, said McCausland. A gun was found in the house.

Johnson was being treated for a gunshot wound at a Portland hospital, officials said. Her younger son, Brayden, was not hurt.

Detectives are investigating whether the violence stemmed from a landlord-tenant dispute, McCausland said. Johnson and her family moved into the apartment in October.

Pak is being held at the York County Jail in Alfred and is expected to make his initial court appearance either Monday or Wednesday, depending on the availability of a judge.

The victim's bodies were transported Sunday to the medical examiner's office in Augusta, where autopsies will be performed.

Thompson was an auto detailer at a local car dealership and had attended Biddeford High School, and Welch worked at a local coffee shop and graduated from Thornton Academy in Saco, according to their Facebook profiles and a list of Thornton Academy graduates. Two people who answered a phone call at the coffee shop would not comment.

Online shopping soars to new heights in 2012; revenues touch $14 ...

New Delhi: People turned to the Internet to buy everything from diapers to books, houses and even groceries this year, pushing e-commerce revenues in the country to $14 billion with the possibility of even higher earnings in 2013.

Factors like spiralling inflation and slower economic growth failed to dampen the online shopping frenzy as more and more companies opted for selling wares through the internet route, offering innumerable options and discounts to buyers.

While travel still comprises a significant portion of the e-commerce market, other segments are catching up . Reuters

?Increasing Internet penetration and availability of more payment options boosted the e-commerce industry in 2012. Besides electronics, customer traction grew considerably in categories like fashion and jewellery, home and kitchen and lifestyle accessories like watches and perfumes,? Snapdeal Vice President (Marketing) Sandeep Komaravelly said.

While travel still comprises a significant portion of the e-commerce market, other segments are catching up fast. ?Apparel, books and lifestyle categories (beauty, footwear and health) will drive e-commerce,? HomeShop18.com Founder and CEO Sundeep Malhotra said, adding that relatively stable and growing domestic economy will also be major growth drivers.

?The coming year looks promising for the industry.? According to Peppercloset.com owner Sumeet Arora, e-commerce segment has doubled to $14 billon this year from $6.3 billion in 2011. This figure is likely to reach 38 million by 2015.

So, what can one expect in 2013 from the thousands of e-commerce websites. ?More personalised offers, loyalty programmes and better customer care is what most e-commerce companies would focus on to offer customers a richer, more relevant online experience,? an industry analyst said.

According to HomeShop18.com, an innovation that will ?revolutionise? e-commerce in India is cost optimisation through warehouse and logistics management that will enable companies to do profitable business.

While players like eBay and IndiatimesShopping have been around for a while, one saw many more portals mushrooming in 2012. An important entry in the Indian market was that of one of the world?s largest online retailer ?Amazon.com. The website launched the desi version as ?Junglee.com?. India also got its own version of ?Cyber Monday? on December 12 this year as ?e-tailers? like Flipkart, Snapdeal, Homeshop18 and Makemytrip, partnered Google India to offer discounts for online shoppers.

Celebrated on the Monday after Thanksgiving, the term ?Cyber Monday? was first coined in 2005 as a marketing term and has grown as a phenomenon over the years in the US.

According to analysts, factors like growing Internet penetration, increasing spending power, availability of multiple payment methods like credit/debit cards, cash on delivery, combined with faster adoption of smartphones and tablets are contributing to the growth of the sector.

?Mobility most likely will be the trend to look forward to the next year. Mobile commerce would be huge as more and more people access Internet through tablets and smartphones. Most companies are looking at enhancing their mobile presence,? Malhotra said.

According to a study by IMRB International and IAMAI, there were an estimated 137 million Internet users in the country as of June 2012. Of this, while 99 million were from urban parts of the country, the remaining 38 million were from rural India.

The next year is expected to see increased participation from tier 2 and tier 3 cities.?With a gap of demand and supply in physical retail category, online shopping is set to grow in tier 2 and tier 3 cities. The introduction of cash on delivery has helped gain the trust of consumers in these markets and get rid of the apprehension of using credit cards online,? he said.

According to him, there is a rising demand for books and health and beauty products from these cities, but tier 2 markets score highest on kids and baby items and home appliances. The year also saw acquisitions and consolidation activities picking up pace as dozens of online shopping portals set up shop.

Among major deals, Snapdeal acquired Esportsbuy.com, Flipkart acquired letsbuy.com, Madeinhealth was acquired by Healthkart, Yatra.com acquired Travelguru from Travelocity Global, Fashionandyou acquired UrbanTouch and Myntra.com bought SherSingh.com

?Acquisitions and consolidations will continue?its just the begining and will continue happening over the next few years. Bigger players will acquire smaller players and more investments will flow into the segment,? Arora said.

Despite the fact that most of these e-commerce companies are yet to start making money, growth prospects for these companies remain high and there seems no dearth of investors.According to experts, in 2012, the e-commerce companies in India raised over $500 million (about Rs 2,743.3 crore).

In one of the biggest fund raising by an Indian e-commerce firm, Flipkart in August this year raised $150 million (about Rs 822 crore) from four investors.Entertainment ticketing website BookMyShow.com also saw Rs 100 crore investment by Accel Partners, while Yebhi.com raised funding from Fidelity Growth Partners India and Qualcomm Ventures.

While ?one will not see obscene valuations?, investors would continue to make small investments and 2013 will be a year of growth and consolidation, Arora said.Online retail has also seen an heavy overlap with social networking due to aggressive marketing on such platforms.

?As smartphones and tablets continue to proliferate, companies will need to embrace multi-channel commerce strategy in 2013,? Purehomedecor.com owner Sandeep Jaglan said. While consumers will be spoilt due to choice, players will have to sweat it out to differentiate themselves from the competitors.

Komaravelly of Snapdeal believes that personalisation would emerge as a key focus area in 2013. ?The ability to customise and personalise shopping experience for customers will become a critical differentiator. Social and mobile platforms will see increased customer adoption in the coming year,? he said.

Elitify.com Founder and CEO Amit Rawal agrees. ?The market is overcrowded with companies that are competing for the same pie and have very little differentiation in their product offering,? he said.

Differentiation is centered around beating the other in marketing and competing on prices, both of which are not sustainable trends for any industry, he added.?So the only way forward is consolidation of players that can create synergies both in terms of operations and product offerings,? Rawal said.

Marketing campaigns by major players like Flipkart and Jabong have also made e-commerce a household phenomenon, especially in the big cities, say experts.Social media would also become crucial as more brands use social data to not just popularise their brands but also personalise experience for customers on their websites.

Some experts are of opinion that cash on delivery, which is at present the predominant payment mechanism, will become less popular and give way to usage of debit/credit cards.?Given the various disadvantages like longer cash cycles for retailers, collection challenges etc, cash on delivery will become less popular and cards will start becoming more ubiquitous,? Malhotra said.

With more lucrative deals, loyalty plans and newer products hitting the online shelf, netizens can shop to their heart?s content. 2013 surely promises to make customer the king for e-commerce companies.

Black boxes, plane documents examined in Russian airline crash that killed 5

MOSCOW - Investigators on Sunday examined flight recorders and other evidence to try to determine the cause of the airliner crash in Moscow that killed five people, an official said.

The Tu-204 belonging to Russian airline Red Wings was carrying eight people, all of them crew members, when it careered off the runway Saturday while landing at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport. It went partly into an adjacent highway, broke into pieces and caught fire.

Four people were pronounced dead soon after the crash and the airline said on its Twitter account that a fifth, a flight attendant, died Sunday. Those who died Saturday were the pilot, co-pilot, flight engineer and another attendant, Red Wings said.

The survivors were reported in critical or serious condition in Moscow hospitals.

Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for Russia's main investigative agency, was quoted by Russian news agencies saying the data recorders were being examined, along with fuel samples. In addition, he said flight documents for the plane have been taken from the airline for examination.

Philippine president secretly signs contraceptives law

Valte said the passage of the law ?closes a highly divisive chapter of our history? and ?opens the possibility of cooperation and reconciliation? among those who oppose and support the ?Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012.?

One of the most outspoken opponents of the legislation while it was still being debated in Congress, retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz, said Aquino is dividing the country while adopting a ?first world country value system.? He warned that the law will be followed by the passage of a divorce bill and same-sex marriage, both strongly opposed by the Church.

Cruz, a former president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, criticized the secret signing of the law despite the presidential certification that it was an urgent measure.

?What is that? He is either ashamed of it or he is afraid of the repercussion of that bill,? Cruz said.

?My first objection there is why don?t you call a spade a spade? Why do you have to call it ?reproductive health?? Come on. That is population-control legislation,? he said. ?From the onset there is already deception.?

He said responsible parenthood as taught by the church entails using only natural family planning methods. Providing artificial contraceptives will ?separate pleasure from the hardship? of bringing up a family.

?This government has now entered the bedroom bringing with it the condom and the pill.... That is very irresponsible,? Cruz said.

He said a Catholic group is planning to question the law at the Supreme Court.

Women?s groups and other supporters of the law have praised Aquino for pushing its passage within the first half of his six-year term after the measure languished in Congress for 13 years largely because legislators were reluctant to pass it because of the strong opposition of the Catholic Church.

The Aquino administration ?should be commended for its political will to see this law through,? said Carlos Conde, Asia Researcher for the U.S.-based Human Rights Watch.

Conde said the law ?will advance human rights in the Philippines, particularly of women and mothers? and empower them to make their own decisions over their health and family life. ?It gives a clear mandate to the government to make reproductive health services readily available and, because of that, the law can save many lives,? he said.

In about a dozen provisions, the 24-page law repeatedly reminds that abortion drugs are banned, but it requires health workers to provide care for those who have complications arising from illegal abortions.

Under the law, the government will hire more village health workers who will distribute contraceptives, especially to the poor, and provide instructions on natural family planning methods that the Church approves.

The government will also train teachers who will provide age- and development-appropriate reproductive health education to adolescents ? youth age 10 to 19 years old. This will include information on protection against discrimination and sexual abuse and violence against women and children, teen pregnancy, and women?s and children?s rights.

Home Alone: Managing Your Pet's Separation Anxiety

Imagine your family leaving for an indefinite period of time without knowing where or why they?re going and how long they?ll be away. This is what many pets experience when their families leave. Without the ability to understand that they?ll return, pets become anxious?experiencing feelings of fear, depression and other taxing emotions. They communicate these feelings in a variety of ways, causing both their families, and themselves, a great deal of distress otherwise known as separation anxiety.

WHAT IS IT?

Separation anxiety syndrome is a distress response most common in dogs when they?re separated from the person or people they?re most attached to. Roughly 7-28 percent of domesticated dogs may experience some degree of separation anxiety, according to Leighanne Goyder, D.V.M., with Johnson Ranch Veterinary Clinic in Roseville. Dr. Goyder goes on to say that while it?s possible, it?s much less common in cats or other domesticated animals.

CAUSES

While it?s not fully understood why some dogs experience separation anxiety and others don?t, it?s important for families to know that their dogs aren?t trying to punish them for being left alone; rather, their behavior is a panic response. ?Some speculated causes include lack of appropriate pet-owner interactions, improper socialization to owner departure and absence, prolonged contact with humans without learning to be alone, traumatic episodes during owner absence, and cognitive decline,? Dr. Goyder says.

Patti Hebert, R.V.T., with MarketPlace Veterinary Hospital in El Dorado Hills, notes that, ?It is common practice to label any ?home alone? problems as separation anxiety. [Similar behaviors] may not be due to separation anxiety. These behaviors may be seen from boredom. Your pet may not be getting enough exercise, playtime, potty breaks or social contact.? It?s important to rule those possible causes out before concluding that your pet has separation anxiety.

SYMPTOMS

According to Dr. Goyder, barking, howling, destructive behavior and inappropriate elimination are the most common symptoms of separation anxiety. She adds that ?specific events may trigger anxiety in an affected dog, like getting keys, putting on shoes or jackets, or packing the car, etc.? Really, any undesired behavior, especially those harmful to the dog or the home while you?re away, may be signs of separation anxiety syndrome.

In an attempt to protect their home and belongings, families often turn to leaving their dog outside. Hebert advises against this, stating that, ?When left outside, these dogs will turn into escape artists as they tunnel under, chew through or jump over fences. In their attempt to escape, they often injure themselves.?

TREATMENT

If you suspect that your dog may have separation anxiety syndrome, see your veterinarian, who will perform necessary steps to determine the cause of your pet?s symptoms. ?Providing your vet with a complete history will help determine if the pet is suffering from a behavioral condition, such as separation anxiety syndrome,? Dr. Goyder explains. The severity of the pet?s behavior will determine the treatment, which may include:

  • Behavior modification techniques. Whether alone or in conjunction with other treatments, behavior modification techniques are the best method for managing separation anxiety. Dr. Goyder explains that ?independence training, counter conditioning (associating leaving with something pleasant like a good stuffed toy or treat), changing departure and return routines, and graduated planned departures and absences can all help.?
  • Oral medication. Some pets with separation anxiety syndrome may be prescribed oral medication to help decrease anxiety. Dr. Goyder recommends that families pair this option with behavior modification techniques for best results.
  • DAP plug-in diffusers and collars. DAP is a synthetic version of a pheromone of nursing dogs. It has been found to pacify puppies and can be helpful in calming dogs in fearful, stressful or anxiety-ridden situations.

WHAT WON?T HELP

The Humane Society of the United States has found the following tools in treating separation anxiety to be ineffective:

  • Punishment
  • Getting another dog
  • Crating
  • Radio/TV noise (unless used as a safety cue)
  • Obedience training (separation anxiety is not the result of disobedience or lack of training; therefore, it has not been found effective in treating separation anxiety.)

Living with a pet who suffers from separation anxiety syndrome can be extremely difficult, especially for the primary member of the family whom the pet is most attached to. For the well-being of the animal and his ?people? family, it?s imperative to identify the problem then work to find an effective treatment. ?

SAILORMy Dog with Separation Anxiety

Living with a dog with separation anxiety is like living with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. When I?m home, my dog Sailor is perfectly well behaved and simply the cutest thing (in my humble opinion). The minute I leave the house, however, she becomes a completely different dog. I have to ?dog proof? my house before departing, because if something?s left out (even a loaf of bread), it will be eaten or destroyed. She?ll jump on counters and on top of the refrigerator, try to get into the trash (which I?ve learned to barricade off), attempt to escape, etc. Whenever I leave, I don?t know what I?ll come home to, which often makes it difficult to enjoy my day. Once she was diagnosed with separation anxiety, I worked with her vet to find effective treatments. While her anxiety has improved with treatment, it doesn?t seem to be something that will ever be cured, but we work very hard to make the situation work because Sailor?s an important member of our family.

What is a wrist replacement? - Ask Doctor K, Harvard Medical School

DEAR DOCTOR K:

We?ve all heard of hip and knee replacements ? but is it true that you can have your wrist replaced too?

DEAR READER:

We like to think of ourselves as irreplaceable, but the truth is that some of our parts are replaceable. The joint replacements you hear most about are those of the knees and hips, but surgeons also have been replacing hand joints for decades.

Joint replacement (arthroplasty) in the hands is actually more challenging than in larger joints such as the hips or knees. That?s because of the hands? intricate bone structure and smaller joint size. Joint replacement surgery in the hands is a delicate procedure. You wouldn?t use the word ?delicate? to describe a hip or knee replacement, even though the surgery does require considerable precision.

Wrist arthroplasty involves removing damaged bone or joints and replacing them with artificial, or prosthetic, joints. The artificial joints provide patients with a better range of motion and more stability. This makes everyday tasks like writing much easier.

Wrist arthroplasty can be done as an inpatient or outpatient procedure. Sometimes general anesthesia is used; other times, you are awake, but feel no pain because the nerves from your hand are numbed.

In the surgery, the surgeon removes the first row of carpal bones (the bones that lie between the forearm and the hand). Then the surgeon shapes the end of the radius (the main forearm bone) to fit one part of the artificial joint, which is attached to the end of the bone. The other part of the artificial joint fits over carpal bones in the wrist. A plastic spacer fits between the two components.

Now the two artificial joint surfaces move easily against each other, creating a flexible and pain-free wrist. (See illustration.) Individual knuckle and finger joints may also be replaced.

Wrist arthroplasty

Illustration of wrist arthroplasty

In a wrist arthroplasty procedure, a surgeon replaces the damaged wrist joint with an artificial joint that includes several metal components.

?

People with rheumatoid arthritis are most likely to benefit from a total wrist replacement, but it can also help people with osteoarthritis or traumatic arthritis.

Wrist replacement is major surgery and recovery takes several weeks. If you?re considering joint replacement, weigh the benefits and risks. Age is an important factor. But the final decision is based on your level of pain and how much your wrist stiffness and pain limit your activities.

Wrist replacement surgery may be a good option if one or more of the following apply to you:

  • You cannot complete normal daily tasks without help.
  • You have significant pain every day.
  • Pain keeps you awake at night despite the use of medications.
  • Nonsurgical approaches have not relieved your pain.
  • Less-complicated surgical procedures are unlikely to help.
  • Pain keeps you from doing daily activities or your job.
  • Pain doesn?t subside when you rest.
  • You suffer severe side effects from the medications.

Joint replacement surgery is one of the great advances of medicine in the past 40 years. I speak as a grateful recipient of a hip replacement.

Cheers! Alcohol and Your Metabolism: New Year's Eve | BostInno

As Ultimate Bootcampers, we have a work hard, play hard mentally. We enjoy a challenging bootcamp workout, but we also love to gather with friends and ring in the New Year with a few cocktails. We know you?ll indulge a little bit next week, but we wanted to share the truth about how alcohol really affects your metabolism, so you can keep it in mind when you are trying to achieve your New Year?s resolutions and healthy living goals in 2013.

Here it is: Alcohol significantly sloooooows down (we?re talking turtle slow, inch worm slow) your body?s normal metabolic process.

How Alcohol Slows your Metabolism

The metabolic process is your body?s act of turning food and drink into other compounds that, ultimately, our body uses for energy. Throwing a wrench into your metabolism like alcohol means your body can?t absorb the proper energy source it needs for day to day functions.

While you might not feel the effect a couple glasses of wine has on your everyday functions, you will absolutely feel the lack of effort your body gives to you during an intense boot camp workout. I?m talking increased shortness of breathe, legs that feel like 1 ton boulders and arms that laugh at you when attempting bicep curls. Wait, I think I just described a typical boot camp workout without alcohol?make it a 2 ton boulder. ;o)

A standard drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits. Each standard drink contains a similar amount of alcohol. This alcohol prevents the proper processing of vitamins and minerals which are needed in the natural metabolic functions. Without the vitamins and minerals, energy production is reduced.

Also hindered ? by even just a small amount of alcohol ? is the ability of your body to bring on lipid oxidation (the burning of fats), according to the American Journal of Clinical Research.

How alcohol contributes to weight gain

Alcohol contains almost TWICE the amount of calories per gram (7 calories per gram) than proteins and carbohydrates. This is one of the reasons why it contributes to weight gain ? even if you?re working out regularly.

Plus, research has shown a 20% increase in calories consumed at a meal when alcohol was consumed before the meal. So, that often means that healthy summer salad you just ordered might turn into a salad + bread & oil + dessert + an extra drink or two. In studies, people who drank alcohol with their meals consumed a total of 33% more calories!

So if you?re really looking to lose weight or fit into a smaller dress or pant size in the New Year, kicking alcohol to the curb could help speed up the process ? and your metabolism.

At Ultimate Bootcamp, we want to help you achieve your fitness goals in 2013! We are giving participants that commit to 8 weeks of Ultimate Bootcamp workouts $100 cash back at the end of their experience. We?ll be there to motivate you along the way and help you get the results you want. With each workout burning 500-700 calories, you?ll be sure to see a difference in your fitness level at the end of your 8 weeks!

Airstrike in Yemen kills 2 al-Qaida suspects

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? An airstrike killed two suspected al-Qaida militants in Yemen on Friday while tribesmen with links to the group were believed to be behind an attack on an oil pipeline elsewhere in the country, Yemeni security officials said.

Officials and residents suspect that the strike in the southeastern province of Hadramawt was carried out by a U.S. drone. Washington considers al-Qaida in Yemen the group's most dangerous branch and has carried out drone strikes that have killed militants there before.

Yemeni security officials said the two men were killed while riding a motorcycle. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The attack around the town of Shehr comes just days after another suspected drone strike in the same area killed five al-Qaida militants. The Interior Ministry said among those killed in that attack was Abdullah Bawazir, the chief architect behind a mass prison break last year that freed dozens of fighters who then took arms against the government and helped administer al-Qaida rule in the south.

The group overran entire towns and villages in southern Yemen last year by taking advantage of a security lapse during nationwide protests that eventually ousted the country's longtime ruler. Backed by the U.S. military, Yemen's army was able to regain control of the region but al-Qaida militants continue to launch deadly attacks against Yemeni security forces that have killed hundreds.

On Monday, another suspected U.S. drone strike killed two militants in the southern town of Radda in Bayda province, which was also briefly overrun by al-Qaida militants earlier this year.

Elsewhere in Yemen, al-Qaida linked tribesmen were believed to be behind an attack on an oil pipeline in the northeastern province of Marib, just hours after the line was fixed on Friday. Tribesmen from Marib have also attacked power stations in the past.

The government has carried out deadly strikes against the tribesmen in recent weeks, but has failed to stop the acts of sabotage.

The more than 430 kilometer-long (260 miles) oil pipeline carries around 100,000 barrels of oil per day. The government said the acts of sabotage this month alone have amounted to $310 million in losses to the impoverished Arab nation.

Some tribal chiefs are also suspected of being allied with former longtime President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The attacks appeared to be aimed at undermining the new government.

Top 2012 Posts: New Homes are Less Expensive to Maintain ? Eye ...

With the end of 2012 approaching, we here at NAHB?s Eye on Housing thought we would take a look at the updates that attracted the most readers over the last year.? In April, we took a look at the cost advantages of new homes.

??????????

April is new homes month. And one of the virtues of a newly constructed home is the savings that come from reduced energy and maintenance expenses.

Data from the 2009 American Housing Survey (AHS) offer proof. The AHS classifies new construction as homes no more than four years old.

For example, for routine maintenance expenses, 26% of all homeowners spent $100 or more a month on various upkeep costs. However, only 11%? of owners of newly constructed homes spent this amount. In fact, 73% of new homeowners spent less than $25 a month on routine maintenance costs.

Similar findings are available for energy expenses. On a median?per square foot basis, homeowners spent 78 cents per square foot per year on electricity. Owners of new homes spent 65 cents per square foot per year.

For homes with piped gas, homeowners spent on average 53 cents per square foot per year. Owners of new homes spent 38 cents per square foot per year.

These data highlight that a new home offers savings over the life of ownership due to reduced operating costs. This is one of the many reasons that the current system of appraisals needs updating to reflect the flow of benefits that come from features in a new home.

Blades and clades: Why some grasses got better photosynthesis

Dec. 24, 2012 ? Even on the evolutionary time scale of tens of millions of years there is such a thing as being in the right shape at the right time. An anatomical difference in the ability to seize the moment, according to a study led by Brown University biologists, explains why more species in one broad group, or clade, of grasses evolved a more efficient means of photosynthesis than species in another clade did.

Their findings appear this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Biologists refer to the grasses that have evolved this better means of making their food in warm, sunny and dry conditions with the designation "C4." Grasses without that trait are labeled "C3."

What scientists had already known is that while all of the grasses in the BEP and PACMAD clades have the basic metabolic infrastructure to become C4 grasses, the species that have actually done so are entirely in the PACMAD clade. A four-nation group of scientists wondered why that disparity exists.

To find out, Brown postdoctoral researcher and lead author Pascal-Antoine Christin spent two years closely examining the cellular anatomy of 157 living species of BEP and PACMAD grasses. Using genetic data the team also organized the species into their evolutionary tree, which they then used to infer the anatomical traits of ancestral grasses that no longer exist today, a common analytical technique known as ancestral state reconstruction. That allowed them to consider how anatomical differences likely evolved among species over time.

Paradoxically, to understand C4 evolution, the researchers focused on the anatomy of C3 grasses in each clade.

In general what they found was that in the leaves of many PACMAD C3 grasses the veins were closer together, and that the veins themselves were surrounded by larger cells ("bundle sheath" cells) than in BEP C3 grasses. Ultimately PACMAD grasses had a higher ratio of bundle sheath cells to mesophyll cells (cells that fill in the area between veins).

In C4 plants, such an anatomical arrangement facilitates a more efficient transfer and processing of CO2 in the bundle sheath cells when CO2 is in relatively short supply. When temperatures get hot or plants become stressed, they stop taking in as much CO2, creating just such a shortage within the leaf.

So PACMADs as a group had developed an anatomical predisposition to C4 photosynthesis that BEP grasses didn't, said senior author Erika Edwards, an assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Brown.

"We found that consistently these PACMAD C3s are very different anatomically than the C3 BEPs," she said. "We think that was the evolutionary stepping stone to C4-like physiology."

When the new leaves turned over

It didn't used to be this way. Back around 60 or so million years ago, BEP and PACMAD grasses were more similar and both headed in the same direction. The distance between the leaf veins in both clades had been growing closer together. But then they started to diverge in a key way. The bundle sheath cells surrounding the veins in BEP grasses started to shrink down while those in PACMAD grasses stayed larger.

For a long time the climate didn't particularly punish or reward either of those directions. But then climate changed, and opportunity knocked, Edwards said. Only PACMAD was near the proverbial door.

"When atmospheric CO2 decreased tens of millions of years after the split of the BEP and PACMAD clades, a combination of shorter [distances between veins] and large [sheath] cells existed only in members of the PACMAD clade, limiting C4 evolution to this lineage," Christin and co-authors wrote in the paper.

The researchers also found that evolution among C4 grasses was anatomically nuanced. Some C4 grasses evolved because of advantageous changes in outer sheath cells, while others saw the improvement in inner sheath cells.

Ultimately, Edwards said, studies like this one show that plant biologists have made important progress in understanding the big picture of when and where important plant traits evolved. That could lead to further advances in both basic science, and perhaps agriculture as well.

"Now that we have this increasingly detailed birds-eye view, we can start to become a more predictive science," she said. "Now we have the raw goods to ask interesting questions about why, for example, one trait evolves 10 times in this region of the tree but never over here. In terms of genetic engineering we're going to be able to provide some useful information to people who want to improve species, such as important crops."

In addition to Christin and Edwards, the paper's other authors at Brown were David Chatelet and Laura Garrison. Other authors were Colin Osborne of the University of Sheffield in the U.K.; J. Travis Columbus of Claremont Graduate University in California; Guillaume Besnard of the Universite Paul Sabatier-Ecole Nationale de Formation Agronomique in Tolouse, France; Trevor Hodkinson of Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland; and Maria Vorontsova of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Surrey, U.K.

The National Science Foundation (grants 0920147 and 0843231), the Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellowship (252568) and the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (10LABX-41) supported the research.

Confirmed: Asteroid won't hit Earth in 2040

A new study confirms that a huge asteroid will pass harmlessly by Earth in 28 years.

New observations of the asteroid 2011 AG5 now give astronomers complete confidence that the 460?foot-wide (140-meter-wide) space rock won't hit Earth in the year 2040. When it was discovered last year, scientists said that 2011 AG5 had a 1-in-500 chance of impact with our planet.

Astronomers solidified the asteroid's harmless status during an observation campaign in October, using the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii. The finding added more support to a NASA study that came to a similar conclusion in June based on months of observations of asteroid 2011 AG5.

      4. 'Star of Wonder' leaves lots to wonder about

The researchers behind the latest study say the asteroid shouldn't get any closer than 550,000 miles (890,000 kilometers) ? about twice the distance between Earth and the moon.

"These were extremely difficult observations of a very faint object," the University of Hawaii's Richard Wainscoat, a member of the team of researchers monitoring 2011 AG5, said in a statement. "We were surprised by how easily the Gemini telescope was able to recover such a faint asteroid so low in the sky."

Just because it is a large asteroid doesn't mean it's easy to see, scientists said. Researchers used the Gemini North to photograph the asteroid three times in October.

NASA astronomers and other scientists regularly monitor the sky for asteroids that could pose a potential impact threat to Earth. About 9,000 such near-Earth asteroids have been discovered to date, though up to a million or more could exist, NASA scientists say.

Nearly 95 percent of the largest near-Earth asteroids, those larger than 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) in size, have been identified, NASA scientists say. The space agency's Asteroid Watch program to monitor nearby space rocks is based at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

Striving For Personal Development? Try These Tips! | Samuel Levitz ...

Self improvement is about bettering yourself and taking on things that improve upon who you are as a person. Personal development usually focuses on increasing your self-awareness, expanding your knowledge, taking steps towards achieving personal goals and working on spiritual growth. Steps for improving yourself are available in the below article. A deeper understanding of yourself can result if you take slow and measured steps moving forward.

Your body?s health and your mental health are two sides of the same coin, and each has a close effect on the other. Have healthy meals that are full of nutrients, and be sure to exercise as much as you can. Remember that a healthy body can lead to a healthy mind.

Never take on more than you can handle when you are attempting to achieve your goal. Do your best, but do not overwork yourself to the point of physical or mental exhaustion. You still need to take care of your body when trying to achieve a goal. You will never improve yourself if you neglect your body in the pursuit of personal development.

TIP! If you?re not living up to the goals that you set for yourself, take a good hard look at what may be wrong. Find out some ideas online and look to others who have similar expectations.

Therapy might be the solution for people who have serious issues. Self help books are useful to an extent, but they lack the substance or personal touch that a therapist can provide to a patient. Even the simple act of having someone impartial that you can talk to can improve your chances for success. Books don?t offer the opportunity for discussion that psychiatrists can.

Spend time with people who are like-minded to you. They?ll help you stay on track by being good role models for positive behavior, and you?ll better balance any negative energy you get from people who aren?t as supportive of your self-improvement goals.

Start organizing your life. You will feel accomplished and your mind will feel clearer. An additional benefit is that the stress you felt from disorganization will be eliminated. Organizing your environment can be a calming and centralizing influence.

TIP! Your core principles are important, and your actions should reflect them. Your individual core beliefs are what support your sense of self.

Accomplish the things in life you want to accomplish. A plan for your ideal life is a great starting point, but a plan without action will get you nowhere. Identify your goals and take the necessary actions to make it happen.

We all make mistakes which includes making poor food choices once in a while. Try to do better next time, and don?t worry about that cheesecake you had last night. Today is a new day.

True leaders are humble as they exercise their power. Mention the weaknesses or problems that you see, but be kind when doing so. Do not forget that being a good leader means that you must also know how and when to follow others. A successful leader is one who demonstrates integrity and virtue as an example to others.

TIP! Try not to take yourself too seriously. We are all but tiny dots in the scope of this universe.
