Coming up: U.S. Q4 GDP, ADP January jobs

WASHINGON (MarketWatch) - The U.S. likely grew about 1% in the final three months of 2012 and the ADP January employment report is forecast to show a 173,000 increase in jobs, according to economists surveyed by MarketWatch. The ADP report comes out at 8:15 a.m. and GDP at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. The projected decline in GDP would mark a sharp drop from the 3.1% pace in the third quarter, but investors should look beyond the headline number. The fourth-quarter report could be stronger in some aspects, such as consumer spending and business investment. Meanwhile, payroll processor ADP is likely to show that private-sector hiring in the U.S. slowed from an initially reported 215,000 pace in December.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Brooklyn Nets center Brook Lopez has been chosen to replace the injured Rajon Rondo on the Eastern Conference All-Star team.

Commissioner David Stern on Wednesday selected Lopez, who is averaging 18.6 points and 7.3 rebounds for the second-place Nets.

Rondo, the Boston Celtics point guard who was voted to start the Feb. 17 game in Houston, has a torn ACL. The East head coach, likely Erik Spoelstra of Miami, will decide who replaces Rondo in the starting lineup.

New semiconductor research may extend integrated circuit battery life 10-fold

Jan. 30, 2013 ? Researchers at Rochester Institute of Technology, international semiconductor consortium SEMATECH and Texas State University have demonstrated that use of new methods and materials for building integrated circuits can reduce power -- extending battery life to 10 times longer for mobile applications compared to conventional transistors.

The key to the breakthrough is a tunneling field effect transistor. Transistors are switches that control the movement of electrons through material to conduct the electrical currents needed to run circuits. Unlike standard transistors, which are like driving a car over a hill, the tunneling field effect transistor is more like tunneling through a hill, says Sean Rommel, associate professor of electrical and microelectronic engineering.

"The tunneling field effect transistors have not yet demonstrated a sufficiently large drive current to make it a practical replacement for current transistor technology," Rommel says, "but this work conclusively established the largest tunneling current ever experimentally demonstrated, answering a key question about the viability of tunneling field effect transistor technology."

Rommel worked with David Pawlik, Brian Romanczyk and Paul Thomas, three graduate students in the microelectronic engineering and microsystems engineering programs at RIT. Along with colleagues from SEMATECH and Texas State University, the team presented the breakthrough findings at the International Electron Devices Meeting in San Francisco this past December.

In order to accurately observe and quantify these current levels, a fabrication and testing procedure was performed at RIT. Pawlik developed a process to build and test vertical Esaki tunnel diodes smaller than 120 nanometers in diameter, Rommel explains. This procedure allowed the researchers to measure hundreds of diodes per sample. Because of the nanometer-scale devices tested, the researchers were able to experimentally observe currents substantially larger than any previously reported tunneling currents.

Esaki tunnel diodes, discovered in 1957 and the first quantum devices, were used to create a map showing output tunnel currents for a given set of material systems and parameters. For the first time, researchers have a single reference to which they can compare results from the micro- to the mega-ampere range, Rommel adds.

"This work may be used by others in designing higher performance tunneling field effect transistors which may enable future low power integrated circuits for your mobile device," he says.

The team's findings in the area of developing high performance, low-power electronic devices are also detailed in the paper, "Benchmarking and Improving III-V Esaki Diode Performance with a Record 2.2 MA cm2 Current Density to Enhance Tunneling Field-Effect Transistor Drive Current." The National Science Foundation, SEMATECH and RIT's Office of the Vice President of Research sponsor the work.

Timbaland Sues Insurance Co. Over Lost $1.8 Mil Watch ...

timbaland-lawsuit million-dollar-suicide-watch-lost-insurance-payment

It's been two years, but Timba doesn't care!

The ridiculously successful rapper and producer is tired of waiting on the cash he swears his shady insurance company owes him!!

Timbaland recently filed a lawsuit against American Home Assurance Company? if they won't replace his $1.8 MILLION watch he lost, he's going to sue them for the cash-money!

His timepiece cost $50K to insure and the Give It To Me singer isn't keen on flushing that kind of dough down the drain!

If you remember, the same lost item that reportedly put him on suicide watch ? no pun intended ? a few years SexyBack back.

Wow!! It must keep super accurate time, LOLz!!

Where did the thing end up?!

In his daughter's belly, perhaps!?

In the court papers, Timbaland said:

"[My two-and-a-half-year-old daughter] picked [the watch] up and played with it until she became bored and discarded it somewhere? It has never been found."

Holy cannoli!

If we owned a metal diamond detector, we'd comb his yard for the multi-million dollar missing watch right the eff now!

Obama launches push for immigration overhaul

Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? Seeking swift action on immigration, President Barack Obama on Tuesday will try to rally public support behind his proposals for giving millions of illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship, as well as making improvements to the legal immigration system and border security.

The president will launch his push in a campaign-style event in Las Vegas, a day after a bipartisan group of senators unveiled their own plan for addressing an issue that has languished in Washington for years.

Administration officials said Obama would largely endorse the senators' efforts, though immigration advocates said they expected the president's own proposals to be more progressive than the Senate group's, including a faster pathway to citizenship.

The simultaneous immigration campaigns were spurred by the November presidential election, in which Obama won an overwhelming majority of Hispanic voters. The results caused Republican lawmakers who had previously opposed immigration reform to reconsider in order to rebuild the party's reputation among Hispanics, an increasingly powerful political force.

Most of the recommendations Obama will make Tuesday are not new. He outlined an immigration blueprint in May 2011 but exerted little political capital to get it passed by Congress, to the disappointment of many Hispanics.

Obama "believes that we are at a moment now where there seems to be support coalescing at a bipartisan level behind the very principles that he has long put forward and behind principles that have in the past enjoyed bipartisan support," White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday. "And that is a very positive thing."

The president was to make his pitch in Nevada, a political battleground he carried in November, in large part because of support from Hispanics in the state.

Nationally, Obama won 71 percent of the Hispanic vote, giving him a key advantage over Republican rival Mitt Romney.

Administration officials said the president would bolster his 2011 immigration blueprint with some fresh details. His original plan centered on four key areas: a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S., improved border security, an overhaul of the legal immigration system, and an easier process for businesses to verify the legal status of workers.

Administration officials said they were encouraged to see the Senate backing the same broad principles. In part because of the fast action on Capitol Hill, Obama does not currently plan to send lawmakers formal immigration legislation.

However, officials said the White House does have legislation drafted and could fall back on it should the Senate process stall. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss internal strategy.

Gay and lesbian advocates were also expecting Obama's proposals to include recognition of same-sex couples where one partner is American and another is not.

Obama's previous proposals for creating a pathway to citizenship required those already in the U.S. illegally to register with the government and submit to security checks; pay registration fees, a series of fines and back taxes; and learn English. After eight years, individuals would be allowed to become legal permanent residents and could eventually become citizens five years later.

The Senate group's pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the U.S. would be contingent upon securing the border and improving tracking of people in the U.S. on visas. Linking citizenship to border security could become a sticking point between the White House and lawmakers.

The Senate framework would also require those here illegally to pass background checks and pay fines and taxes in order to qualify for a "probationary legal status" that would allow them to live and work here ? but not qualify for federal benefits ? before being able to apply for permanent residency, a critical step toward citizenship. Once they are allowed to apply they would do so behind everyone else already waiting for a green card within the current immigration system.

Passage of legislation by the full Democratic-controlled Senate is far from assured, but the tallest hurdle could come in the House, which is dominated by conservative Republicans who've shown little interest in immigration reform.

The senators involved in formulating the immigration proposals were Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

Several of these lawmakers have worked for years on the issue. McCain collaborated with the late Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on comprehensive immigration legislation pushed by then-President George W. Bush in 2007, only to see it collapse in the Senate when it couldn't get enough GOP support.

Farmers Insurance Open 2013: Tiger Woods Leads At Torrey Pines ...

By Randall Mell, GolfChannel

SAN DIEGO ? His shadow hasn?t fallen this darkly over a tournament since before that crash into a neighbor?s yard shook loose the best pieces of his game.

Tiger Woods heads into Monday?s conclusion of the Farmers Insurance Open towering like the giant talent of old.

He?s piecing together a vintage performance at Torrey Pines, one that seems destined to rank among his most complete, pre or post scandal.

At 17-under through seven holes of the final round, Woods has built a six-shot lead on Brandt Snedeker (through 13 holes) and Nick Watney (through eight holes).

?It?s probably the whole package,? Woods said when asked what is working best this week. ?I?ve driven the ball well. I?ve hit my irons well, and I?ve chipped and putted well.?

Farmers Insurance Open: Articles, videos and photos

Woods is looking to win his 75th PGA Tour event, his eighth professional title at Torrey Pines.

This isn?t over, Woods cautions. He?s only 61 holes through the 72-hole event, and yet it sure feels like it?s over. It feels like the tournament staff can start carving Woods? name on another trophy. The sense of inevitability that marked Woods? prowess as a frontrunner is beginning to come back here.

Woods has led, or shared the lead, 53 times going into the final round of a PGA Tour event. He?s closed the door on a win 49 times.

With so many dominant efforts at Torrey Pines, Woods is threatening to fashion his most dominant yet. He won by eight shots at Torrey Pines in this event in ?08. A record rout?s within reach.

The confidence in Woods? step, in his body language, suggests Monday?s a foregone conclusion, though Woods isn?t conceding anything.

?I?ve got to continue executing my game plan,? Woods said. ?That?s the idea. I?ve got 11 holes to play, and I?ve got to go out there and play them well.?

About the only thing that did not look quite right Sunday was Woods without his red shirt. He says he?s breaking it out Monday. That just might complete the picture of old.

When Woods is at his best, he crushes more than golf balls. He crushes his opponents? spirits. We?re seeing the possibility of that kind of domination again this week. We?re seeing it like we haven?t seen it since Woods? life was turned upside down back at the end of ?09.

We saw it most poignantly at the fourth hole in the final round, where Woods gave his challengers hope, only to dash them with a great escape, a classic recovery.

Woods blew his drive way right at No. 4, a nasty little hole for him this week. He double bogeyed it in the first round.

Four shots ahead there late Sunday afternoon, Woods couldn?t have liked his predicament when he reached his ball. He appeared stymied behind a tree.

Woods crossed his arms and studied the mess the way a plumber studies a clogged toilet.

This, though, is where Woods might have sealed the field?s fate.

With a swing that made him look like a matador whirling a cape away from an angry bull, Woods carved a hard cut around the tree, running his great escape from 160 yards up near the front of the green. From there, all he did was chip in, holing out from 40 feet. He made birdie from that mess, actually gaining a shot on his closest pursuers instead of losing one.

?It came out cutting,? Woods said. ?I was surprised I was able to get that much club on the golf ball with that much grain coming into me,? Woods said.

Woods has looked dominant with his driver, but he started the final round spraying it. He missed the fairway way left at the first, way left again at the second and way right at the fourth, and yet he was 2-under on the final round going to the fifth tee and actually building on his lead.

?I had the lead, and the whole idea was to build on my lead,? Woods said. ?I?ve done that so far. I?ve got to do it again tomorrow.?

With a runaway Monday, Woods builds on the idea he can still dominate this game.

5 Ways to Enhance Your Relationship Every Day | World of ...

5 Ways to Enhance Your Relationship Every DayThe everyday ? filled with its supposedly inconsequential interactions and circumstances ? is actually quite consequential when it comes to romantic relationships.

That?s because relationships are cumulative, said Nikki Massey-Hastings, Psy.D, a psychotherapist who specializes in couples. ?Each seemingly insignificant daily interaction with one?s partner builds upon the interactions from yesterday, last week, and last year? for better or worse.?

A couple with a history of loving interactions and success solving daily problems is more likely to have a securely attached relationship, Massey-Hastings said.

And that?s a great thing. Couples with a secure attachment are able to rely on each other, turn to each other for comfort and traverse potentially tough times, she noted.

In other words, positive daily interactions create buffers against future challenges.

Take parenting, for instance. One of Massey-Hastings?s clients told her: ?We finally had dinner and watched a movie last night for the first time since we brought the baby home. At the end of our night, we smiled at each other and said ?see you in 3 months! Miss you.??

This couple was able to joke about their situation because they had years of wonderful interactions and success dealing with mundane problems like decorating their bedroom and deeply emotional ones like figuring out treatments for their autistic son, she said.

Silvina Irwin, Ph.D, a clinical psychologist who also works with couples, described relationships as ?living bonds.? According to Irwin, ?without regular tending and attention, [the relationship] will wither and suffer.?

But you might be worried that working on your relationship is another time-consuming task to heap on an already overflowing pile of responsibilities. However, as Irwin said, ?tending to your relationship can be woven into the fabric of your everyday life with a little extra thought and intention.?

Below, she and Massey-Hastings share five suggestions for enhancing your relationship every day.

1. Create connection-boosting rituals.

?Create a meaningful way to connect that meets both partners? needs for connection that you can count on each day,? Massey-Hastings said. For instance, when she was just beginning her career, she and her husband would eat dinner together almost every night.

But then her schedule changed, and that was no longer possible. ?One week of this shift and we were both in tears ? we didn?t realize how much that ritual structured our time to connect,? she said. So they revised their routine. Today, they have a snack when she gets home.

?Eating together and talking about the day, for couples and for families, is a very powerful ritual of connection,? she said.

Rituals don?t need to be elaborate, either. It could be something as simple as rubbing each other?s feet every night, which Massey-Hastings and her husband also do. It?s a minute but meaningful ritual they look forward to, she said.

If you have kids, you can create rituals after they?re in bed. For instance, Massey-Hastings works with a couple who cuddles in bed for 30 minutes after putting their child to bed.

2. Be affectionate when you say hello or goodbye.

?A time that lends itself naturally to acknowledging your bond is around moments of separation and reunions,? said Irwin, who also leads workshops for couples. She suggested asking yourself: ?Do I hug and kiss my partner when we greet each other or say goodbye??How about in the evening when we say goodnight??

If you?ve been together for a long time, you might not. But this can contribute to ?couples feeling more like roommates than lovers,? she said. Whether it?s a hug, kiss or touch, daily physical attention can greatly enhance your relationship.

3. Let your partner know they?re on your mind.

Send your partner a text, leave a loving note or give them a quick call during the day, Irwin said. As she noted, these seemingly small gestures communicate an important message: ?You matter to me.? ?This can be especially meaningful when folks work long hours or experience prolonged periods of separation,? she said.

4. Acknowledge how much your partner means to you.

Let your partner know the things they do or say that are meaningful to you, Irwin said. Maybe your partner gives you a massage every night or cracks a joke after you?ve had a tough day at work. Maybe they make you coffee every morning or always wash the dishes after you cook dinner.

?[This] shows that you aren?t taking your partner for granted, and lets them know that they make a difference in your life,? she said. ?A wonderful positive spiral that can ensue when we take a moment to point out the way we appreciate our partner,? she added.

5. Check in with each other.

?Make it an intention to slow down, make eye contact, sit near each other, touch one another and check in,? Irwin said. Even just asking your partner ?How are you?? is a beautiful way to bond.

?These conversations bring a significant point of connection in couples? sometimes-busy, seemingly parallel lives.?It?s saying to each other ?In our crazy lives, the person I want to talk with at the end of the day is you!?? she said.

Relationships certainly take work. But nourishing your partnership every day isn?t painstaking. Instead, it gives you the opportunity to build your bond. Plus, helping your relationship blossom on a daily basis helps you cope better as a couple with the inevitable challenges of life.

Asia's trend-setters feeling iPhone fatigue

16 hrs.

SINGAPORE?? Apple's iconic iPhone is losing some of its luster among Asia's well-heeled consumers in Singapore and Hong Kong, a victim of changing mobile habits and its own runaway success.

Driven by a combination of iPhone fatigue, a desire to be different and a plethora of competing devices, users are turning to other brands, notably those from Samsung Electronics, eating into Apple's market share.

In Singapore, Apple's products were so dominant in 2010 that more devices here ran its iOS operating system per capita than anywhere else in the world.

But StatCounter, which measures traffic collected across a network of 3 million websites, calculates that Apple's share of mobile devices in Singapore ? iPad and iPhone ? declined sharply last year. From a peak of 72 percent in January 2012, its share fell to 50 percent this month, while Android devices now account for 43 percent of the market, up from 20 percent in the same month last year.

In Hong Kong, devices running Apple's iOS now account for about 30 percent of the total, down from about 45 percent a year ago. Android accounts for nearly two-thirds.

"Apple is still viewed as a prestigious brand, but there are just so many other cool smartphones out there now that the competition is just much stiffer," said Tom Clayton, chief executive of Singapore-based Bubble Motion, which develops a popular regional social media app called Bubbly.

Leading indicators
Where Hong Kong and Singapore lead, other key markets across fast-growing Asia usually follow.

"Singapore and Hong Kong tend to be, from an electronics perspective, leading indicators on what is going to be hot in Western Europe and North America, as well as what is going to take off in the region," said Jim Wagstaff, who runs a Singapore-based company called Jam Factory?that's developing mobile apps for enterprises.

Southeast Asia is adopting smartphones fast ? consumers spent 78 percent more on smartphones in the 12 months up to September 2012 than they did the year before, according to research company GfK.

Android rising
Anecdotal evidence of iPhone fatigue isn't hard to find: Where a year ago iPhones swamped other devices on the subways of Hong Kong and Singapore, they are now outnumbered by Samsung and HTC smartphones.

While this is partly explained by the proliferation of Android devices, from the cheap to the fancy, there are other signs that Apple has lost followers.

Singapore entrepreneur Aileen Sim recently launched an app for splitting bills called BillPin, settling on an iOS version because that was the dominant platform in the three countries she was targeting ? Singapore, India and the United States.

"But what surprised us was how strong the call for Android was when we launched our app," she said.

Indeed, 70 percent of their target users ? 20-something college students and fresh graduates ? said they were either already on Android or planned to switch over.

"Android is becoming really hard to ignore, around the region and in the U.S. for sure, but surprisingly even in Singapore," she said. "Even my younger early-20s cousins are mostly on Android now."

BillPin launched an Android version this month.

Standing out from the crowd
Napoleon Biggs, chief strategy officer at Gravitas Group, a Hong Kong-based mobile marketing company, said that while Apple and the iPhone remained premium brands there, Samsung's promotional efforts were playing to an increasingly receptive audience.

For some, it is a matter of wanting to stand out from the iPhone-carrying crowd. Others find the higher-powered, bigger-screened Android devices better suited to their changing habits ? watching video, writing Chinese characters ? while the cost of switching devices is lower than they expected, given that most popular social and gaming apps are available for both platforms.

"Hong Kong is a very fickle place," Biggs said.

Janet Chan, a 25-year-old Hong Kong advertising executive, has an iPhone 5, ?but its fast-draining battery and the appeal of a bigger screen for watching movies is prodding her to switch to a Samsung Galaxy Note II.

"After Steve Jobs died, it seems the element of surprise in product launches isn't that great anymore," she said.

Shifting trends
To be sure, there are still plenty of people buying Apple devices. Stores selling their products in places such as Indonesia were full over the Christmas holidays, and the company's new official store in Hong Kong's Causeway Bay has queues snaking out of the door most days.

But the iPhone's drop in popularity in trendy Hong Kong and Singapore is mirrored in the upmarket malls of the region.

"IPhones are like Louis Vuitton handbags," said marketing manager Narisara Konglua in Bangkok, who uses a Galaxy SIII. "It's become so commonplace to see people with iPads and iPhones so you lose your cool edge having one."

In the Indonesian capital Jakarta, an assistant manager at Coca Cola's local venture, Gatot Hadipratomo, agrees. The iPhone "used to be a cool gadget, but now more and more people use it," Hadipratomo said.

There is another influence at play: hip Korea. Korean pop music, movies and TV are hugely popular around the region, and Samsung is riding that wave. And while the impact is more visible in Hong Kong and Singapore, it also translates directly to places like Thailand.

"Thais are not very brand-loyal," says Akkaradert Bumrungmuang, 24, a student at Mahidol University in Bangkok. "That's why whatever is hot or the in-thing to have is adopted quickly here. We follow Korea, so whatever is fashionable in Korea will be a big hit."

This report was written by Jeremy Wagstaff in Singapore, with additional reporting by Lee Chyen Yee in Hong Kong, Khettiya Jittapong and Amy Sawitta Lefevre in Bangkok, and Andjarsari Paramaditha in Jakarta.

Guidelines for brain amyloid imaging in Alzheimer's

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Only recently has it become possible to create high-quality images of the brain plaques characteristic of Alzheimer's disease in living people through positron emission tomography (PET). Even so, questions remain about what can be learned from these PET images and which people should have this test.

To provide guidance for physicians, individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's, and the public, the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) and the Alzheimer's Association have jointly published the first criteria for the appropriate use of this imaging technology to aid in the diagnosis of people with suspected Alzheimer's disease. The criteria were published online January 28 as an article "in press" by Alzheimer's & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association and "ahead of print" in The Journal of Nuclear Medicine.

"Our primary goal is to provide healthcare practitioners with the information and options available to provide patients with the best possible diagnosis and care in a cost effective manner," said Maria Carrillo, Ph.D., Alzheimer's Association vice president of Medical and Scientific Relations.

Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) for Brain Amyloid Imaging with PET in Alzheimer's

While elevated beta amyloid plaques are one of the defining pathologic features of Alzheimer's, many elderly people with normal cognition also have elevated levels of these plaques, as do people with conditions other than Alzheimer's dementia. Therefore, the potential clinical use of amyloid PET requires careful consideration so that its proper role may be identified.

To develop the new criteria, the Alzheimer's Association and SNMMI assembled an Amyloid Imaging Taskforce (AIT) consisting of dementia and imaging experts to review the scientific literature and develop consensus recommendations for the clinical use of this promising new technology.

The AIT concluded that amyloid imaging could potentially be helpful in the diagnosis of people with cognitive impairment when considered along with other clinical information, and when performed according to standardized protocols by trained staff. In addition, they emphasized that the decision whether or not to order amyloid imaging should be made only after a comprehensive evaluation by a physician experienced in the assessment and diagnosis of cognitive impairment and dementia, and only if the presence or absence of amyloid would increase certainty in the diagnosis and alter the treatment plan.

According to the AIT, appropriate candidates for amyloid PET imaging include:

  • Those who complain of persistent or progressive unexplained memory problems or confusion and who demonstrate impairments using standard tests of cognition and memory.
  • Individuals meeting tests for possible Alzheimer's, but who are unusual in their clinical presentation.
  • Individuals with progressive dementia and atypically early age of onset (before age 65).

Inappropriate candidates for amyloid PET imaging include:

  • Those who are age 65 or older and meet standard definitions and tests for Alzheimer's, since a positive PET scan would provide little added value.
  • Asymptomatic people or those with a cognitive complaint but no clinical confirmation of impairment.

Amyloid PET imaging is also inappropriate:

  • As a means of determining the severity of dementia.
  • When requested solely based on a family history of dementia or presence of other risk factors for Alzheimer's, such as the ApoE-e4 gene.
  • As a substitute for genetic testing for mutations that cause Alzheimer's.
  • For non-medical reasons, such as insurance, legal or employment decisions.

"As amyloid imaging becomes more prevalent in clinical settings, medical professionals must understand how to appropriately utilize the test," said Frederic H. Fahey, D.Sc., SNMMI president. "Neurology and dementia experts should order the test only when appropriately indicated, and nuclear medicine and molecular imaging professionals must ensure they have been adequately trained to interpret the results of the scan. Working together, we hope that the information garnered from amyloid PET imaging will aid in diagnosis and play a pivotal role in the development of new treatments for Alzheimer's."

The taskforce acknowledged that the healthcare provider makes the ultimate judgment regarding the care of each patient. The AIT sought to assist this process and identified the following general sequence of events for the use of amyloid PET according to the new criteria:

  1. Evaluation by a dementia expert to assess the need for diagnostic testing, possibly to include amyloid PET if the AUC are met.
  2. Referral to a qualified provider of amyloid PET services.
  3. Performance, interpretation and reporting of the amyloid PET scan according to established standards.
  4. Incorporation of the PET result into the clinical assessment process.
  5. Disclosure of the PET result by the clinician to the patient and caregivers, along with discussion of the result and its management consequences.

Although identifying potential benefits, the AIT concluded that amyloid PET results will not constitute and is not equivalent to a clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease dementia. They said that imaging is only one tool among many that clinicians should use judiciously to manage patients, and that amyloid PET imaging does not substitute for a careful history and examination.

"Because both dementia care and amyloid PET technology are in active development, these new appropriate use criteria will require periodic reassessment and updating," Carrillo said.

PET Amyloid Imaging in Alzheimer's -- An Overview

PET uses radiopharmaceuticals (radioactive drugs) to produce three-dimensional functional images of the brain or other body part. In amyloid PET imaging, the radiopharmaceutical is introduced into the body by injection into a vein and binds specifically to the amyloid protein, enabling visualization of areas in the brain where amyloid has clumped together into plaques. One of the new PET compounds was approved for general use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in April 2012.

  • If a person with dementia does not have amyloid buildup in their brain, then the cause of the dementia is very likely to be something other than Alzheimer's disease. Other causes of dementia include: strokes, thyroid problems, drug interactions, chronic alcoholism, and vitamin deficiencies.
  • If an amyloid imaging PET scan shows that a person with memory impairment has amyloid buildup in their brain, this increases the likelihood that the memory impairment is caused by Alzheimer's disease, but it remains a likelihood, not a certainty.
  • If a person without memory complaints or impairment has amyloid buildup, it does not necessarily mean that they will develop Alzheimer's. Many people have amyloid in their brains but are cognitively normal. More research is needed to understand the significance of amyloid plaques in this population.

Amyloid imaging is not covered by insurance at this time, and costs for the scan are "out of pocket." While costs of amyloid PET are not yet established, and PET costs in general can vary depending upon location, other PET scans are known to cost between $1,000 and $3,000, or more. Nonetheless, the AIT concluded that the proven sensitivity and specificity of the new radiopharmaceuticals for brain amyloid and the known association between brain beta amyloid deposition and Alzheimer's suggest these new radiopharmaceuticals could potentially be helpful in the workup and diagnosis of patients with cognitive impairment.

Quantum communication: Each photon counts

Monday, January 28, 2013

The detector combines near-unity detection efficiency with high timing resolution and has a very low error rate. The results have been published by Nature Communications(doi:10.1038/ncomms2307).

Ultrafast, efficient, and reliable single-photon detectors are among the most sought-after components in photonics and quantum communication, which have not yet reached maturity for practical application. Physicist Dr. Wolfram Pernice of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), in cooperation with colleagues at Yale University, Boston University, and Moscow State Pedagogical University, achieved the decisive breakthrough by integrating single-photon detectors with nanophotonic chips. The detector combines near-unity detection efficiency with high timing resolution and has a very low error rate. The results have been published by Nature Communications(doi:10.1038/ncomms2307).

Without reliable detection of single photons, it is impossible to make real use of the latest advances in optical data transmission or quantum computation; it is like having no analog-digital converter in a conventional computer to determine whether the applied voltage stands for 0 or 1. Although a number of different single-photon detector models have been developed over the past few years, thus far, none have provided satisfactory performance.

Several new ideas and advanced developments went into the prototype developed within the "Integrated Quantum Photonics" project at the DFG Center of Functional Nanostructures (CFN). The new single-photon detector, tested in the telecommunications wavelength range, achieves a previously unattained detection efficiency of 91%.

The detector was realized by fabricating superconducting nanowires directly on top of a nanophotonic waveguide. This geometry can be compared to a tube that conducts light, around which a wire in a superconducting state is wound and, as such, has no electric resistivity. The nanometer-sized wire made of niobium nitride absorbs photons that propagate along the waveguide. When a photon is absorbed, superconductivity is lost, which is detected as an electric signal. The longer the tube, the higher is the detection probability. The lengths involved are in the micrometer range.

A special feature of the detector is its direct installation on the chip, which allows for it to be replicated at random. The single-photon detectors built thus far were stand-alone units, which were connected to chips with optical fibers. Arrangements of that type suffer from photons being lost in the fiber connection or being absorbed in other ways. These loss channels do not exist in the detector that is now fully embedded in a silicon photonic circuit. In addition to high detection efficiency, this gives rise to a remarkably low dark count rate. Dark counts arise when a photon is detected erroneously: for instance, because of a spontaneous emission, an alpha particle, or a spurious field. The new design also provides ultrashort timing jitter of 18 picoseconds, which is 18 times 10-12 seconds. The novel solution also makes it possible to integrate several hundreds of these detectors on a single chip. This is a basic precondition for future use in optical quantum computers.

The detector demonstrated in this study was designed to work at wavelengths in the Telekom bandwidth. The same detector architecture can also be used for wavelengths in the range of visible light. This would allow the principle to be employed in analyses of all structures that emit little light, i.e., photons, such as single molecules or bacteria.

Obama's About to Make Immigration Reform a New Front in the Gay Rights Battle

The gay community gasped in unison on Monday afternoon, when the Senate revealed an immigration plan that did not include same sex couples. Don't worry gay community. Barack Obama's got you covered. At least according to several of BuzzFeed's sources, he does.

RELATED: Pundits Agree: It's The Wrong Time for Immigration Reform

On Monday night, BuzzFeed's Chris Geidner and Zeke Miller reported that Obama would indeed include same sex couples in his immigration reform package. In their own words: "A Democratic source said, 'Same-sex couples will be part of his proposal.' A second source confirmed that, unlike the Senate framework released Monday, same-sex bi-national couples -- those with one American and one foreign partner -- will be included in the White House principles." This means that, if Obama does make the change and if the proposal makes it through Congress, same-sex couples would have equal rights as heterosexual couples on crucial issues like green cards.

RELATED: Governor Martinez: Illegal Immigration Okay for Me, Not for You

This would be a very presidential move for the president -- decisive, direct and somewhat demanding. After all, the folks on Capitol Hill have so far been super ambivalent about the issue. It was not included in the final proposal, but lawmakers had discussed including same sex couples in the new set of laws. However, when asked why the initial proposal lacked LGBT provision. Sen. John McCain, one of four Republicans working on the proposal simply said, "We'll be working out those details."?Rep. Jerrold Nadler was a little more opinionated about the issue, calling it "madness" that same sex couples were left out, a "major omission."

RELATED: North Carolina (Quietly) Moves to Ban Gay Marriage Forever

No matter what happens from here on out, it's becoming apparent that the gay rights movement is about to latch on to the push for immigration reform. And why shouldn't they? The point of reform is to fix things that are broken, and as the country moves towards greater equality for people of all sexual orientations, why should same sex couples be left out? Well, it could get tricky. If the conversation turns too sharply in the direction of gay rights, the larger immigration reform process could get bogged down or even stuck in the mud completely. Let's leave the ifs alone for now, though, and see what the president actually does.?

Casey Anthony files for bankruptcy protection

After a court acquitted her of murder charges, Casey Anthony is filing for bankruptcy, saying she's only worth $1,100 and still owes close to $800,000 to her lawyers and law enforcement officials.

Anthony owes about $792,000 -- most of it to her defense attorney, according to a Chapter 7 petition filed Friday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, The Associated Press reported.

She also faces three civil lawsuits stemming from the disappearance of her daughter, Caylee Marie, ?the Orlando Sentinel reported.?The 2-year-old girl was reported missing in July 2008 and her body was found that December near the home of Casey Anthony's parents in the Orlando area.

Anthony was found not guilty of murder in July 2011 but was convicted of lying about the child's disappearance. She was sentenced to time served, and on Friday an appeals court struck down two of the lying convictions.

Anthony claimed that a babysitter had kidnapped Caylee, and a woman with the same name is suing for defamation, as is the former meter reader who found the body -- he says Anthony's attorneys damaged him by painting him as a possible killer.

The third suit is by Texas EquuSearch, a search and rescue organization, which says it spent more than $100,000 searching for Caylee.

Anthony's bankruptcy filing said she had only $1,084; here are her main debts, according to the Sentinel report:

  • About $500,000 to defense attorney Jose Baez
  • $145,660.21:?Orange County Sheriff's Office
  • $68,540: Internal Revenue Service
  • $61,505: Florida Department of Law Enforcement
  • $10,283.90: to the Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation?

Don Tapscott: Going Down the Road -- In a Car That Drives Itself

I've just come from an amazing discussion by some brilliant people about how connected vehicles and transportation systems will transform mobility. The discussion focused on how self-driving cars will improve road safety and traffic flow and reduce transportation's carbon footprint.

The idea is that if cars on the roadway can connect with one another and with the roadway itself, there will be fewer accidents and the system will function more efficiently. Cars will drive themselves, and the driver is freed up to do other things. The president of UPS's international division said his drivers typically make 200 deliveries a day. If a UPS truck were smart enough to drive itself, the driver could ready the package for delivery and process the paperwork while enroute. Driver efficiency would rise and fuel consumption would drop.

Imagine your car taking you from your driveway at home to your office's parking lot without you having to touch the wheel. It would be commuter heaven. Long drive times would not be as oppressive now that you could do other things during transit, such as read a book, surf the web, or watch a university lecture. And since the cars of tomorrow will be electric, the concern for exhaust fumes will have gone away.

Europe has been funding research on self-driving cars for more than a decade under a program called Intelligent Co-operative Systems. The project's website catalogues the incredible array of benefits when such a system is fully introduced. They include increased road network capacity, reduced congestion and pollution, shorter and more predictable journey times, improved traffic safety for all road users, and lower vehicle operating costs.

Additional benefits are more efficient logistics, improved management and control of the road network (both urban and inter-urban), increased efficiency of the public transport systems, and better and more efficient response to hazards, incidents and accidents.

Google is also leading the way in research. Google-designed self-driving cars are used in the search engine giant's street-level photos of cities around the world. The project was put in motion by former Google vice-president Sebastian Thrun, now director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and co-inventor of Google Street View. He was one of the session's panelists.

Google's driverless cars have logged more than 480,000 kilometres without the technology ever being responsible for an accident. One car had an accident while a driver was controlling the vehicle, and a second car was hit from behind at a stoplight.

Technology journalist Jeff Jarvis in the audience asked what the timeline is for self-driving cars, and Mr. Thrun said within five years. Mr. Thrun, a great evangelist for self-driving cars, said the first time in the vehicle is exhilarating. Within 10 minutes people are willing to trust the car totally. In normal driving the car's controls are better than the best human drivers. Passengers feel uncomfortable when the human driver takes over.

But accidents will be sure to happen, and the question that was put to the Davos audience was: Would the citizens of your country accept some level of fatalities in accidents caused by "technology failure" attributed to a centrally controlled system, in exchange for fewer overall transportation fatalities provided by reduced human error? Only 46 percent said yes, while 54 percent said no. This prompted an interesting discussion on technology failures on planes and trains.

The audience was also asked: Autonomous transportation systems require a free flow of information between transportation providers. Will governments accept facilitating and/or managing the process and liabilities associated with this information exchange? The audience was divided between 53 percent Yes and 47 percent No.

ROCK HILL: Finalists for Winthrop president selected | Education ...

? For the first time in more than two decades, Winthrop University will host presidential finalists hoping to hold its top leadership position.

The finalists, announced Friday morning, are ?top flight? and it?s time to ?sell Winthrop to them,? said Bob Thompson, a Winthrop Board of Trustees member.

Those in the running to succeed retiring President Anthony DiGiorgio were chosen from more than 100 applicants and passed through two in-person interviews and reference and background checks.

Next, finalists will each embark on three-day visits to meet with students, employees and community members.

The finalists are Jeff Braden of North Carolina State University; Jayne Marie Comstock of the American Council on Education and Butler University; Elizabeth Dale of Drexel University; and Ulysses Hammond of Connecticut College.

?The candidates are student-focused,? said Kambrell Garvin, Winthrop?s student representative on the presidential search committee.

?They go out on their campuses, and they really do attempt to engage students and that?s something that we found to be really, really exciting.?

Campus visibility is important to faculty and staff, said Cliff Calloway, the committee?s faculty representative.

?If you talk to the faculty, you?ll get a pretty wide range of opinions,? Calloway said. ?A lot of the faculty ? at least as far as a common theme ? would like a new president that will be interactive with the faculty across campus.?

The university plans to use an online survey for students, faculty and staff to share opinions about the finalists after they?ve visited campus, said Kathy Bigham, trustees board vice chairwoman.

Visits start Sunday

A dean at N.C. State University in Raleigh, Braden will be the first finalist to make an official visit to Winthrop. He?s no stranger to the campus, Braden said Friday.

He has worked with Winthrop faculty in the past, helping support educational psychology development in Lancaster County schools. Winthrop, he said, is a ?beautiful campus? that, unlike many places, actually ?looks better in person than it does in pictures.?

Dale is the senior vice president for institutional advance at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Her Winthrop visit starts Wednesday.

She said she is looking forward to seeing Winthrop ?flourishing? next week with student activities and classes

She took a ?self-guided? tour of the campus last month during a time students and faculty were on winter break.

?It is a beautiful and well-manicured campus, and I was impressed by how well the newer facilities were integrated into the Neo-Georgian architectural style of the historic buildings,? she said.

Winthrop will host Hammond and Comstock throughout the first full week of February.

Hammond is vice president for administration at Connecticut College in New London, Conn.

Next month?s trip will be Hammond?s third Winthrop visit.

?The stunning beauty of the campus,? he said, and friendliness of the people at Winthrop and in Rock Hill have impressed him.

He likes Winthrop?s size, Hammond said, which allows ?the development of close relationships between faculty, students and staff.?

Comstock is the director of the executive leadership group at the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C.

She has visited Winthrop a few times in the past several years, she said ? most recently dropping in last weekend with her husband.

?We tried to view the campus as prospective parents and determined that Winthrop would be a top choice,? Comstock said Friday.

Comstock was named as a finalist in October for a presidential post at Jacksonville University in Florida.

Winthrop?s final hiring decision is expected to be made by the end of February by Winthrop?s trustees board.

DiGiorgio is the longest-serving president of any public university in South Carolina. His successor will be Winthrop?s 10th president, transitioning into the role after June.

Meet the finalists

Braden will be at Winthrop Sunday through Tuesday, Dale Wednesday through Friday, Hammond Feb. 3-5 and Comstock Feb. 6-8. The Herald will list times and locations of meet-and-greet sessions as that information becomes available.

Big spending China threatens J-League's reign

By JOHN DUERDEN

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:08 a.m. ET Jan. 25, 2013

SINGAPORE (AP) -The Chinese Super League has shaken off corruption scandals and is spending big on international stars sparking debate as to how much ground it has made up on a Japanese J-League coping with a continuing exodus of young talent.

A growing number of the J-League's best players are heading to European teams. 2012 Olympic star Kensuke Nagai left Nagoya Grampus earlier in January to join Standard Liege of Belgium, while Genki Omae became the 11th Japanese player to join Germany's top tier, shifting to Fortuna Dusseldorf from Shimizu S-Pulse.

Shimizu coach Afshin Ghotbi told Associated Press he would like to see more done to ensure talent remains longer, or at least teams receive transfer fees of sufficient size to allow investment in developing talent.

"J-League clubs have to do a better job in keeping players in Japan by signing longer term contracts and renewing them prior to their final year," said Ghotbi who added that the rise of Chinese football is good for Japan.

"Due to the number and quality of the young Japanese players, the J-League has been able to sustain its quality, but unless measures are taken, at some point we will see a decline in the quality and popularity of the league."

The booming Chinese league has overtaken the J-League in terms of average attendance, partly due to major investment in overseas talent.

Guangzhou Evergrande, Guangzhou R&F, Shanghai Shenhua and Dalian Aerbin are also in the process of signing foreign players of higher quality than their Japanese counterparts.

Speculation as to whether Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka will spend another season with Shanghai Shenhua has overshadowed some interesting purchases by Chinese clubs.

Marcello Lippi, who led Italy to the 2006 World Cup, and now coach of Guangzhou Evergrande, splashed out $7.4 million in December on Brazil's Elkeson de Oliveira Cardoso to add to a squad that reached the last eight of the 2012 Asian Champions League.

Guangzhou also won a second successive Chinese championship with a squad of Chinese national team players and highly-rated and highly-paid imports such as Dario Conca and Lucas Barrios.

Dalian Aerbin signed French international Guillaume Hoarau from Paris Saint Germain. At 28, Hourau is no veteran approaching the end of his career, but a talented player at the peak of his career.

U.S.-born Tom Byer played in Japan in the forerunner to the J-League and since retiring has played an influential role in the country's highly-rated youth development system. He is now Head Technical Consultant to the Chinese School Football Program administered by the Ministry of Education.

"China is surely signing bigger marquee players than the J. League," Bayer said. "It seems like the `90s in Japan when every club had to have one or two stars. Time will tell if the Chinese Super League will get it right with the massive investment that some clubs are making."

The departure of talent from Japan has its positives according to Byer, who believes that it has made the J-League more competitive. 2008 Asian Champion Gamba Osaka was relegated in 2012 while seven-time champion Kashima Antlers has fallen on lean times leaving relatively unfashionable teams such as Kashiwa Reysol, Vegalta Sendai and Sanfrecce Hiroshima to challenge for titles.

Philippe Troussier, coach of the Japan national team from 1998 to 2002 who is now plying his trade in China, acknowledges that while the departure of talented players can weaken the J-League in the short-term, it will be of long-term benefit to Japan.

"There are in Japan a high number of talented players for the future and the fact that some of them go to overseas can give to the local players more opportunities to play," the Frenchman said.

When Shinji Kagawa, now of Manchester United, left Cerezo Osaka in 2010 to join Borussia Dortmund, Hiroshi Kiyotake cemented his place in the team's starting lineup. So impressive was the midfielder that he broke into the Japan national team and earned a move to FC Nuremberg in the Bundesliga.

"We have many young players challenging overseas, especially in Europe. Even though many talented players move, we still have a lot of promising young players in the J-League and they grow through actual opportunities to play," the J-League's head of public relations, Kazayuki Hagiwara, said. "Players coming back share their unique experience. In the medium and long term, this virtuous cycle helps Japanese football develop."

And far from being a threat to Japan, Hagiwara also claims that the rise of China is a positive.

"Developing football in Asia, including China, and improving Asian football's position in the world is very important for the J-League."

According to the well-traveled Troussier, China still has some way to go.

"We can compare the current Chinese policies with Japanese policies 20 years ago," he said. "Chinese football looks very attractive at the moment with so many talented foreign players and coaches but it still needs a long time to reach a high football standard."

Analysts to Apple: Bend your knee to Wall Street

(AP) ? Apple needs to come down off its perch and start making nice with Wall Street, analysts said Thursday as investors hammered the company's stock.

The sell-off put Apple a hair's-breadth away from losing its status as the world's most valuable company. At Thursday's close, it was worth $423 billion, just 1.6 percent more than No. 2 Exxon Mobil Corp.

The plunge was set off Apple's quarterly earnings report late Wednesday, which suggested the company's nearly decade-long growth spurt is slowing drastically.

The stock ended down $63.51 or 12 percent, at $450.50. It last traded that low a year ago.

What can Apple do to boost its stock? Analysts say it may not be able to win back the investors who bought the stock on the way up. They'll be chasing the next hot stock. But the company can make itself appealing to a new crop of investors who've never considered the stock, by doing what Wall Street wants and doling out more of its massive cash pile in the form of more generous dividends and stock buybacks.

Apple's profits for the October-December quarter were flat compared with the year before. It still managed to grow revenue 18 percent from the year before, but the cost of starting up production lines for multiple new products like the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini meant that less revenue flowed to the bottom line.

Of even more concern to investors: Apple's forecast sales growth for the current quarter is around 7 percent compared with a year ago ?far from the 50-percent-plus rate it's often hit in recent years.

Apple usually lowballs its forecasts, but Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer indicated the company will provide more realistic figures from now on.

To be sure, Apple products haven't lost their appeal. Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company couldn't make enough iPhones, iPads and iMacs in the holiday quarter to satisfy demand, so the appeal of Apple's products is intact. The problem is rather that Apple hasn't launched a revolutionary new product since the iPad in 2010.

It may be too much to ask that a company reinvent consumer electronics every few years, but Apple did it three times in a decade with the launch of the iPod, iPhone and iPad. In doing so, the company left investors with the expectation of perpetually zooming growth.

Now, Apple looks quite different. It's still massively profitable, but its growth is moderate, making it similar to companies like IBM Corp. and Microsoft Corp.

"The company is at a bit of a crossroads," said Nomura Securities analyst Stuart Jeffrey. "It's gone from launching big hit products where they didn't have to look at the competitive landscape ? they just did their own thing ? and the growth meant they didn't have to focus on the whims of Wall Street."

The problem, Jeffrey said, is that Apple hasn't adjusted to this reality and worked to find new constituencies among investors. Those who invest in fast-growing companies or chase rising stocks have abandoned the company, and Apple doesn't do enough to attract value and income investors.

Analyst Brian White at Topeka Capital Market said the lack interest from value-oriented investors, who look for bargain stocks, means Apple lacks a safety net when there's bad news, like Wednesday's earnings report. When other companies' stocks fall, value investors tend to swoop in, putting a floor under the stock and dampening volatility.

"No one wants to pay anything for (Apple) because you can't get the value investor to back it up," White said.

Apple sits on a cash pile of $137 billion, which currently earns about 1 percent annual interest. It's a hoard that frustrates many company-watchers, and analysts are virtually unanimous in their opinion that Apple should be putting it to better use.

Apple has taken a step in the right direction, as far as Wall Street is concerned. Last year, it instituted a quarterly dividend of $2.65 per share, a generous sum compared with most technology companies, but paltry when measured against companies with similar cash reserves. It has also started using cash to buy back shares ? another way to reward investors.

But analysts say the company should be doing more. Jeffrey calculates that Apple will generate about another $103 billion over three years, but has only committed to returning $45 billion of this $240 billion in cash to shareholders.

"The company needs to change strategically in a number of ways... including in looking after shareholders," Jeffrey said.

A higher dividend would appeal to value and income investors, and buybacks would reduce the number of shares outstanding, which in turn would get the company's earnings per share growing again.

White has been one of the biggest Apple cheerleaders on Wall Street. He drew attention in April for setting a $1,111 price target for Apple's stock when the shares were trading around $600.

White backed away from his old price target on Thursday. He said he still believes the company is worth that much, but he has realized he's too far in front of the pack. Investors aren't going to give the company the credit it deserves, in his opinion.

"It's tough for people to get their head around. I can't be a visionary forever," White said.

His new price target: $888. Eight is a lucky number in China, and three eights are extra lucky.

"Look, Apple needs a little luck here," White said.
