Paul A. Porter, 42, of Kearney Avenue, and Darryl Patterson, 47, of Mallory Avenue, were arrested at 12:04 a.m. at the Claremont-Lafayette United Presbyterian Church at Claremont and Rose avenues and charged with trespassing and theft, a police report says.
Officers responding to the area on a report of two men loading construction materials onto a pickup truck found Porter and Patterson in a pickup truck and about to leave the area, the report says.
The officers pulled the pickup truck over and Porter said, "We ain't do nothing," but the cops found blue scaffolding in the rear of the pickup and blue scaffolding on the ground behind the church fence, the report says.
That's when police received a call from a witness saying "I was looking out of my window and saw them removing scaffolding from the front of the church and putting it in that white truck. They were going back and forth for about 20 minutes," the report says.
Porter told the officers: "We got this from Hoboken. We been driving around for a few hours and got this from under the viaduct in Hoboken," the report says. When the officers noticed Patterson was sweating profusely, he said: "I sweat a lot. I just loaded up all this stuff in Hoboken. That's why," the report says, adding that both men were arrested.
After being processed, police realized that Porter and Patterson had been arrested on Jan. 10 in the rear of Snyder High School on Bergen Avenue, where they were allegedly stealing sewer plates, the report says, adding that they were charged with theft and possession of burglary tools that day.
