2-inch USB Android gaming console GameStick attempts to take on ...

GameStick

Just last week, we saw the Ouya dev kits ship, and learned that the set-top Android gaming console is still on track for a consumer release. On the heels of that, a new challenger has emerged, and it?s a little different from the Ouya. Dubbed the GameStick, the console is true to its name and is actually packed into a 2-inch USB stick, which happens to fit inside the console?s own controller.

At $79, the GameStick is cheaper than the $99 Ouya, and even though the Ouya is a fairly tiny and thus portable box, the GameStick is much smaller, and only really requires people to carry around a controller, rather than a box and controller. The tiny console plays the same games as the Ouya, as it is the same concept, and the developers note that out of the over 700,000 games found on Android, they have identified around 200 that are perfect for the GameStick, and are working with over 250 studios to help bolster the GameStick?s library.

The console sports an Amlogic 8726-MX processor, with 8GB of flash memory and 1GB of DDR3 RAM. It supports Bluetooth 4.0, and also comes with the standard 802.11 b/g/n WiFi. The console ships with Jelly Bean.

The developers, PlayJam, state that they have a working prototype, and though that prototype isn?t as pretty as the final build will be, they?re 90% of the way toward getting the final pre-production sample.?If you aren?t into the GameStick?s own controller (whenever we see what the final build looks like), the console works with any Bluetooth controller supporting HID.

As with all Kickstarter projects, there are some rewards for pledging funds. A small pledge of $25 gets you a user account name reservation, as well as being listed as a founder, while a $79 pledge will net you a GameStick console and controller. The retail unit is expected to begin shipping in April of this year, so check out the project if you?re interested.
