Choose heating systems that suit your home and family || Plumbing ...

3rd April 2012

When renovating your house, you may find that certain rooms require different heating solutions depending on where they are in relation to external walls and the boiler.

In this case, Anna-Marie DeSouza, editor of Built It + Home Improvement magazine, suggests doing some research into the type of heating that would best suit your home and your family.

"It's a really big factor as to whether you're building a brand new house and you want to put in a new heating system to suit that, or whether you're upgrading your current heating system," she said.

"A lot of it actually depends on how well-insulated and airtight your house is - if you've got a really well-insulated home that matches current building regulations you can go for a lot of the newer technologies, which work really efficiently to [achieve] lower bills."

Ms DeSouze pointed out that you can attach heat pumps to underfloor heating in order to run the system at a low temperature, which gives a "comfortable ambient temperature at most times" and doesn't cost much to run.

However, those who live in older homes that are difficult to insulate and make airtight might be better off with electric radiators.

"Go for a more efficient boiler like a combi if that suits your family, and you'll find that you have a comfortable home and lower running costs," she added.

Meanwhile, a delay to the implementation of the government's Renewable Heat Incentive has led to the oil heating industry expressing concern about the potential impact of the scheme on oil heating customers.

Alan Black, principle oil and bio-liquid applications consultant in the UK and Republic of Ireland, told Oilfiredup.com that the government has missed a "key point" with its financial incentive.

"Replacing any 'high temperature' heat producing appliance such as an oil fired boiler, with a 'low temperature' alternative, will require the replacement of the property's radiator system, with a much larger system, effectively requiring the property to be re-plumbed," he explained.
